Here is a book about the British Empire in India written in 1890 called The Great Red Dragon or London Money Power by L.B. Woolfolk. It mentions famines. For example it says that the “Hindoo population” was kept on “the verge of starvation” and as a result during a 40 year period “frequent famines have carried off millions of the population.”
This is a very readable/searchable PDF. Only parts 1 & 2 are included but part 3 isn’t historical info so it doesn’t matter:
I don’t know how accurate it is. It was written by an American Christian. But it’s worth looking at.
